Many people do not realize that child car seats have an expiration date. Most car seats have the date of expiration stamped on the car seat base or label. Generally a car seat will expire 6 years after the date of manufacture (not the date of purchase).  It is recommended to replace a car seat immediately after a major accident. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has refined the recommended time infants and toddlers should remain rear facing from at least 12 months of age to at least 2 years of age. Evidence shows children under 2 are 75% safer in a rear facing car seat then a forward facing car seat. These are not a legal requirement, only recommendations based on best practice for child safety.
